‘Humanscape’ is born out of a fundamental comprehension of ‘Human’ and ‘landscape.’ As designers, our objective is to capture the nuanced moments of time and replicate them in the spaces we shape. The essence of Humanscapes materializes when memories and acquired lessons are shaped into abodes—spaces that harmonize with and honor the natural surroundings.

The concept of ‘Humanscape’ took root four years ago when we excavated a basement into the natural slope of a residential site. Without predetermined plans, hands worked instinctively to set up the formwork. Light wells and access points materialized organically during this unprocessed procedure, with two walls adjoining underground water tanks and the remaining two supporting soil up to half their height.

This subterranean sanctuary, designed with openings for wind and light, became a cherished spot for midday breaks, lunch hours, and site meetings due to its remarkable thermal comfort. Observing changes in weather, the progression of the day, and raindrops became part of our routine, and it was in this space that the seed of ‘Humanscape’ was sown; a space crafted by numerous hands, hearts, and minds.

Light wells provided glimpses of the evolving structure above, adjusting to varying sunlight, raindrops, and overcast days. With the growth of the building, the comfort within increased, as more reflected light intensified the subtle impact on the interiors.

Through collaborative experimentation, a stone carpet composed of pieces of different shapes, colors, and textures was laid, an opportunity discovered in a stack outside several stone workshops. The concrete shell remained unadorned, allowing the stone carpet to take shape organically, forming layers that either reflected or absorbed light.

Three years later, this area transformed into the envisioned studio for ‘Humanscape,’ blending the warmth of reclaimed wood with the resilience and elegance of metal. The studio’s structure, in its most basic form, employs a metal framework and wooden surfaces to accommodate furniture and utilities.

The open plan of the studio became a canvas for experimentation—today a presentation space, tomorrow a library, a film club on Saturdays, a pottery workshop, or even a venue for traveling exhibitions. The studio is a rough concrete shell with its own pockets of light, shadows, sky, greens, and a garden. It was conceived as a retreat for introspection and a place for the expression and exchange of ideas by many. Glass doors provide the option to stay connected to the sounds of daily life or shut out distractions for focused work.

Green elements within the studio act as reminders of the elements that truly matter. Plants shed leaves, and butterflies visit; temperature, humidity, comfort, silence, and openness create an environment that mirrors our design philosophy, promoting connection.

Artificial lighting assumes a pivotal role, with a mix of suspended lamps and floor lamps generating soothing shadows, and ceiling lights serving functional purposes, adapting to different moods and occasions. The material library is a compilation of crafts from journeys across the country and pieces created by local artisans. The studio embodies the inception of the idea, where we deliberate on life and living, responsibilities towards each other, and our roles extending beyond design in its physical manifestation.
